Marlene McKinnon was a friendly, outgoing girl. At the start of her sixth year, she and best friend Caradoc Dearborn (a fellow Gryffindor sixth year) began dating. Her other best friend, roommate Ellette Dove, was fully supporting of this friendship, and at the same time, the two girls were plotting to get Ellette's mom, new Herbology Professor Margery Dove, and the Charms Professor, Julian Weyland, together, unaware that the two had already met and were already interested in each other. That year, Marlene was also made Captain of the Quidditch team, on which she was a Chaser. She became known as something of a dictator-esque Captain, often jokingly sentencing her team to do hundreds of push-ups. She remained close friends with fellow new-Quidditch-Captain, Ravenclaw Autumn Davis, regardless of their rivalry, which remained friendly. During the attack in Hogsmeade, Marlene and Caradoc argued over their participation in the attack, as Marlene wanted to lend a hand but Caradoc wanted her to remain safe. In the end, however, Caradoc was the one who was injured, and Marlene remained at his bedside in the hospital wing until he recovered. Despite more arguments, they did make up. When her two best friends, Autumn and Ellette, both died on Christmas Eve, Caradoc came to visit her at her family home in Birmingham, and he was the only one she was willing to see at that time. Marlene had aspirations of being an Auror, like her father.
