Eric Hawthorne was the youngest son of Max and Sunny Hawthorne, the second-youngest of four children with two older brothers and one younger sister. Eric was not only an heir to the family fortune and a share of the family company, he also became Vice President of the company after his father retired and passed the position of President and CEO of the company on to oldest son Matthew. At the age of 20, Eric was engaged to Auverian heiress Melissa Chambers, who left Eric standing at the altar. After recovering from his failed relationship, Eric was introduced by his sister to her best friend, Virginia Westin. Eric and Virginia fell in love and, despite a slightly bumpy road, became engaged. While they were engaged, Virginia became pregnant with their child, a daughter whom she would name Calista. Before the wedding (and also before the baby was born), Virginia broke off the engagement, and Eric, distraught by a second broken engagement in so few years, descended into alcoholism. After slicing his hand open on a piece of broken glass (from when he backhanded a bottle of scotch into the wall), his sister forced him to seek treatment, and he is presently a recovering alcoholic, but he has not touched a drop of alcohol since 2006. Although he and Virginia never married and he lives halfway across the world from her, he visits her and their daughter whenever possible.
