Caitlin grew up idolizing her older brother, Eamon, often following him around (though he never really minded it). They both found out that they were wizards when Eamon received his Hogwarts letter in 1952. Caitlin's came five years later, in 1957. Although Caitlin was sorted into a different house than her brother, she still spent much time with him and his best friend and roommate, Alastor Moody. She developed a somewhat childish crush on Alastor while they were all still in school, but she was nothing more than his best friend's kid sister to him, at the time. After finishing school, she worked in Muggle Relations in the Ministry of Magic for a few years, and she joined the Order of the Phoenix along with Alastor (on whom she still had something of a crush) and Eamon (both of whom were now Aurors), at Eamon's urging. In 1975, she was offered the position of Muggle Studies Professor at Hogwarts by Albus Dumbledore, and she accepted. On her 30th birthday, Eamon was killed on a mission to find a group of Death Eaters. It was Alastor who delivered the news to Caitlin, and they found themselves drawn together following their mutual loss. Shortly thereafter, they began dating.
