It was something of a surprise to the family (but a good one) when Bertha Jorkins received her Hogwarts owl at the age of eleven, as she'd never really shown signs of magic before then, and they were afraid that she was a Squib. Bertha was not particularly adept at any of her classes, particularly the ones that required her to use magic, since she seemed to have so little of it. What she absolutely loved, however, was knowing everything that was going on with absolutely everyone (and then, of course, immediately spreading the news about it). Her big mouth frequently got her into trouble with classmates who didn't like being gossiped about, but she just could not stop, nor did she want to. She began to enjoy the fact that she was getting attention at all, from all of her gossiping. Eventually, she went beyond simply repeating what she saw or heard and started embellishing the stories, twisting words and taking things out of context to make them juicier. Although she had aspirations of becoming a reporter after Hogwarts, her father planned to use contacts in the ministry to get her a low-level ministry job that would keep her out of trouble.
